This morning, I watched from my third floor window as my husband walked down the street to catch his bus. I was reminded once again of how some people will persevere no matter what challenges life throws at them.
Without a car, something as simple as getting to work each day has become just such a challenge for my husband. No matter how tired he is, or how cold and windy it is outside, he has to leave by 6:40 every morning to walk to the bus stop. The connecting bus that gets him to work only runs till a certain time in the morning. If he misses it, he doesn’t get to work. That means he cannot be late.
It takes about half an hour to get from our house to the bus stop downtown. I’ve done it myself when I was working, and it’s a long, long walk. Especially when it’s cold and the wind is blowing, like it is this morning. It takes a lot out of you to do that five times a week. No matter how exhausted you are, and how much your body aches, you have to get up in the morning and do it again.
He does this because of love. He does it because he wants to make our life together better, and he’s willing to do what’s necessary to make that happen.
I’m writing about this because I just don’t know how I can ever show enough appreciation for his continuing to do this every day. I suppose this is a small tribute to his strength of character and determination to do what’s right, and to take care of our needs every day. He knows I love him, but I have to keep telling him anyway. This is just another way that I can say ‘I love you.’
