There’s a buzz you can hear on a hot summer day. Maybe you’ve heard it too.
When you’re standing on the sidewalk on a quiet street in the middle of the afternoon, you can feel the heat in the air, and you can feel it radiating from the concrete under your feet. If you close your eyes, and clear your mind, you’ll hear the buzz. Or you don’t actually hear it, so much as feel it. But you don’t feel it the way you feel the heat itself. You feel it with your heart, and with your spirit. Then you let go of everything, and just soak in the heat and relax. Summer is around you in the fullness of the season, and your biggest problem is you can’t decide whether to go swimming or get an ice cream.
Today I bundled up in my coat and scarf to walk to the little market around the corner to get some milk. As I picked my way through the snow still on the ground, the wind rose and took my breath away and I felt deeply cold in my bones. So as I continued walking, I started to imagine a hot summer day, and walking down the same street in my shorts and t-shirt. As I my mind filled with the memory, I perceived this buzz and it made me feel warmer, and made me smile in the face of the wind.
I’ll have to listen for it during the summer this year, and see if it’s really there.
