Saturday, I heard a little bird invite me to come outside.
We were at the home of a relative in Massachussetts. We were happy to be visiting, but unhappy because it was for a funeral. But the unhappiness was tempered by spending time with family we don’t get to see often.
Behind the house is a lovely garden, and I was standing at the back door, getting a breath of air and watching the bumble bees moving among the flowers. Beyond the garden are many tall trees. In one of them was a little bird that called my name.
I stepped through the door into the beautiful day, and the little bird called out a cheerful “hello!” and then continued chattering with his friends. The breeze moved through the high branches of the trees. The trees began to whisper their slow gossip about the land. The bumble bees grumbled at one another but were glad for the sun. The flowers were still busy stretching after having so recently wakened from their long slumber.
Yes, you can hear these things if you are open and willing to listen. I think most people these days are unwilling to be quiet - really quiet, deep inside - enough to hear them. But it’s worth trying. You must be still inside - very still. Hear with your heart as much as your ears. Try it some time, if you like, and let me know what you hear.

I know exactly what you mean. I was listening the other day to all the noises outside and I to would agree that you need to listen with more than just your ears. You have to watch out for those bumblebees though- they dont steer very well and may try to bump into you without meaning to. One of the best sounds is the wind through the pine trees- there is not other sound like it.
I love the new look and feel of the new blog by the way. Keep it up!!
