A Brief Yarn
Jul 15th, 2006 by lisa
I went into A.C. Moore today with the intention of buying tissue paper. I came out with three skeins of yarn, knitting needles and a crochet hook. Oh, and tissue paper. I had decided it was time to learn to knit. I’ve actually tried it before, years ago, but never really mastered it.
The yarn was on sale. They were mill ends and very reasonable. Just the thing for practicing something new. I kind of like the colors, even though I discovered they vary throughout the skein. But for the price I paid, I wasn’t about to complain.
I already know how to crochet. My grandmother taught me many years ago and I made a lot of afghans over the years. Although I haven’t crocheted for a while. I have a book from the library with some basic knitting instructions. I sat on my bed this afternoon, yarn and needles in hand, and attempted some simple knitting and purling. It was frustrating and about fifteen minutes and several snarled fits and starts later, I gave it up.
It’s a good thing I bought the crochet hook. I bought it on impulse in case the knitting didn’t work out. I put away the knitting needles and began making granny squares, something I could probably do in my sleep. Oh I will return to the knitting needles again soon. I still want to learn, and I have a friend at the library who is willing to help me. But I really wanted to start something today and so far I have three squares finished. I’m not sure what the final afghan will look like; I’m going to make it up as I go along. But I rather like the way colors keep changing and I think with the right contrast color to pull it all together this could be a charming and unique piece when it’s finished.
