One of the benefits I have been enjoying since quitting my job at the library is that my feet are beginning to heal. The pain from spending so many hours standing on the concrete floor was really causing me a lot of trouble. My poor feet would often hurt so bad after a full shift, I would sometimes limp all the way home. The problem eased a bit once Paul was able to give me rides back and forth to work, but never entirely disappeared.
At this point, the pain has mostly stopped. I can finally wear the shoes I had abandoned because my feet were often so swollen and sensitive. It’s nice to be able to wear them again. The best part is the hiking. I still need to get a decent pair of hiking boots though. Until then, the hikes will have to be short and relatively easy. I need to get in better shape before tackling anything serious anyway.
It amazes me that they don’t get some sort of pads for the floors there. I had mentioned it a few times, but I guess they felt there were more important things to spend the budget on. It’s an old building and the floors are concrete covered by a thin layer of carpet and padding. That’s not enough when you are asking your people to spend eight hours standing. Geez, even fast food restaurants give their employees floor pads.
When I first started working there, we were allowed to sit for a bit when it wasn’t busy, and I was able to rest my feet. That helped. But as time went on it was made clear that sitting down on the job would not be tolerated. The policy was to look busy at all times, and ‘we’re not paying you to sit’ and all that lovely stuff.
Yet another reason to be thankful I escaped that job.
And, once again, my happy feet are happy.
