Paul is reading The Dangerous Book for Boys, and loving it. (I’m going to have to buy it for him for Christmas or something, if I can wait that long).
This is from a NY Post review by Christina Hoff Sommers…
“The Dangerous Book for Boys” is all about Swiss Army knives, compasses, tying knots and starting fires with a magnifying glass. It includes adventure stories with male heroes, vivid descriptions of battles and a history of artillery. Readers learn how to make their own magnets, periscopes and bows and arrows. It gives rules and tactics for poker and marbles - and secret moves for coin tricks.
In a radical departure from modern schoolroom readings, the book has almost nothing to say about feelings, relationships or how boys can learn to cry. It valorizes risk, adventure and manliness.
But it’s not just about making and doing. It’s literally packed with information. It contains literature, history, science, cultural matters and practical advice. It’s stuff they don’t teach in schools anymore, along with common sense and how to think for yourself.
The book has proven to be wildly popular and bookstores are apparently having trouble keeping it in stock. This is a sad commentary on our society and educational system. This book, so full of cool stuff that boys (of all ages) love, is just what they’ve been starving for.
Well, I think this is best ‘review’ of the book I’ve seen so far.
