We had a bit of a scare this morning.
Paul had to take the car to the auto repair place this morning, so I was at home by myself. I was in the bedroom reading when I heard police car pull into the lot, sirens and blue lights going. I looked out of the front window and saw the fire chief pull in followed by an ambulance. I hadn’t heard our fire alarm go off, so I knew it wasn’t our building. I put on my shoes and went outside to discover the building next to ours had smoke pouring out of the third floor window.
Back inside to get dressed, grab the cat, put her into her carrier and then begin stuffing Various Important Things into a tote bag. What do you grab at a time like this? Cellphone… camera… purse… can’t think… what do I need?
A moment’s reflection and five firetrucks later, I realized that they probably had the situation under control and we would not need to evacuate. No one had come knocking. So I went back outside and confirmed this, then went back inside and let Siofra out of her carrier. She got treats later for being so good about the whole thing.
Meanwhile Paul had called while I had been getting ready to run out the door, wondering about all the firetrucks. I had told him that it wasn’t our building, but that I was getting ready to leave anyway. The poor guy ran all the way home from the car place. By the time I was able to call him and tell him not to hurry he was nearly home anyway. I felt bad, but I would have done the same thing in his place. The instinct to get back to home and family in an emergency like this is a strong one.
All is well now, and things are relatively back to normal. A big Thank You to the excellent fire department we have here in Milford, many of whom are volunteers.
