Faces in Providence

When we were living in Rhode Island, I worked for a while in Providence. Among the things I found fascinating about the city were these masks.
They adorn the side of a building that houses the Trinity Repertory Company. When I first saw them I thought they were Janus Masks, but they are identical. Perhaps whoever sculpted them was attempting an interpretation of them. As they are on the side of a theater though, it would have been nice if they reflected Comedy and Tragedy as the Janus Masks do. But they don’t. This doesn’t make me like them any less. They are striking, and it was almost impossible for me to take my eyes off them whenever I was around them.
Providence isn’t a bad place. I wouldn’t want to live there or anything, but it has it’s charms. Beautiful churches, elegant architecture and a lot of lovely old homes on a hillside. (That is a view I wish I would’ve photographed. Maybe if I ever visit again, I will). It has a Nordstrom, so I’m prepared to be extra forgiving for it’s bad points, and unfortunately it has a lot of bad points.
This is the original photo from which I cropped the masks. Trinity Brewhouse in Providence, Rhode Island, was most likely named after the theater. We went there once to meet with Paul’s workmates when he was working in Providence.
I wish I’d taken more photos when we lived there. I can think of so many place and things I’d love to have photos of. Once we spent a whole day on Federal Hill and I took not one photo. Bad me. I guess I will have to go back and visit someday.
