Hot July brings cooling showers,
Apricots and gillyflowers ~ Sara Coleridge
It certainly is doing that today. I don’t know about the apricots or gillyflowers, but is has been raining all day and it’s nice and cool outside.
If you’re like me, you’re wondering what a gillyflower is. One of my Big Heavy Books informs us that - according to of Chaucer, Spenser, and Shakespeare - a gillyflower is a Dianthus, a genus of flower that includes Carnations, Pinks and Sweet Williams.
I have a little Sweet William plant trying to grow in a little pot on my bookshelf in the bedroom. It was a gift from a friend. I’m afraid it’s not doing very well. It should really be outside, but I have nowhere to plant it. It’s very frustrating not having a garden. I may have to pass it on to a friend who has one.
As for apricots, someone in my family used to make apricot jam that was to die for. Or maybe it’s a friend of the family, I don’t remember. All I remember is the jam was wonderful. So I need to find instructions for doing that myself. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at making preserves, so maybe I’ll start with that. A crockpot recipe would be nice. I’ll have to google it and see what I can find.
I finished harvesting all my photos from Flickr. For future photo-sharing purposes, I’ve installed a gallery on my website. There are only a few photos there for testing purposes. But I think it’ll work nicely for future photo sets that I want to share. If you get a chance, take a look and let me know what you think.
