Handy Market

Wow! This blogpost brought me some very clear memories.
Remember when I wrote about the tree in front of my grandparent’s house? The Handy Market, on the corner of Magnolia Drive and Buena Vista Street, is just around the corner and half a block from that house. My grandparents lived on Frederic Street about halfway between Magnolia and Clark. (A map if you’re interested). That sign looks exactly the way I remember it. I think that’s what brought the memories back so clearly.
We actually stayed with my grandparents for a while. I remember my grandmother would walk to the market almost every day to shop. I often went with her. She didn’t drive, so the owners of the store would let her borrow the shopping carriage so she wouldn’t have to carry all the groceries back to the house. It would be my job to push the carriage home and then return it to the market afterward.
I remember the market being small and cool. And I would, of course, try to get candy or soda or something out of the trip. But what I remember most clearly is the sign on top of the building, and the trips back and forth pushing a shopping carriage down the street. It’s nice to know that this little bit of my childhood is still there.

Yup! in fact on my way a party in North Hollywood I stopped there to buy some mints I think, that was in 2001 and the inside is just as you remember it,small and cool
