How to Cook Fish
Aug 24th, 2007 by lisa
We’ve been incorporating fish into our diet for a few months now. Part of my eat real food campaign. So far the only thing we’ve had is salmon. I’ve never really felt confident about cooking fish. Beef and chicken I’m fine with. But I always thought that fish needed special skills to cook properly. One of Paul’s ex’s had prepared salmon by making a ‘foil tent’ and baking it in the oven, so that’s how we’ve been doing it. The problem is we can’t always find good fresh salmon at the local grocery store, and I’m getting a bit tired of salmon anyway. So it’s time for me to be brave, and move on to other types of fish.
I began my search for tips and advice on preparing different kinds of fish. A google search turned up this page with tips for cooking fish. I noted that there is no method for preparing any certain type of fish, but that all fish can be prepared many ways. Well duh, I don’t know why I didn’t grok that to begin with. When it comes to cooking, why would fish be any different than beef or chicken?
So next time we’re at the grocery store, I’ll just select whatever fish is freshest (and within our budget) and bring it home and cook it. There’s also some nice recipes on this page for sauces and stuffings.
Cooking, like anything else, can be an adventure. If you approach it with a sense of fun and curiosity it can even be a good adventure.

Fish has never been high on my list of favorite foods, okay it’s at the bottom right next to organ meat. I applaud your efforts to incorporate it into your diet. I recently was introduced to Tilapia which is pretty good (probably because it was very mildly flavored).
I don’t want to sound like an alarmist. When you start venturing out to try different fish, please be certain you know where they’re coming from. I read some extremely alarming and disturbing articles last night about the pollution in the waters around China. Yikes!
