For those who asked…this is painted on the side of a building in downtown Woonsocket, Rhode Island where I lived for a few years.
From Woonsocket: My Home Town:
In the late eighteenth century the Ballous and Tourtellots, French Huguenot families, settled in the area. The Ballous, especially Dexter and George, were pioneers in Woonsocket’s textile industry. As the textile industry in Woonsocket grew, so did the need for mill workers. The first French-Canadian families were recruited from Quebec to work in the mills of Woonsocket in the 1840’s. Once started, this migration would continue for almost a century. French-Canadians are still the largest ethnic group in Woonsocket and the city is proud of its French-Canadian heritage.
I have more photos of Woonsocket if you’d like to see them.

Oh wow, great photo!!! Where was this taken???
Ok, I give… what does the fine print say? “Woonsocket?” “Moonsocket?” You’ll have to tell the story of this sign. Something tells me it wasn’t in New Orleans. The more I look at it, the more it makes me smile. It kind of makes me think of a teenager aching to be cool, so they dress in a way they think projects all the coolness that is them without understanding that cool isn’t an appearance, it’s a state of being. Either you is or you isnt’. This sign is trying a bit too hard.
Great picture. It caused me to explore and create a little story in my head! And yes… it was definitely a dragonfly kind of week, wasn’t it?
Cool sign! Where was it taken?
Welcome to Woonsocket RI, and considering where that building sits that is a great isolated shot to make it appear so lonly. stop by and visit “The Look” and happy ww
What a cool picture and what a cool name for a town, Woonsocket! I love places with Indian (Native American to be PC) or otherwise interestingly different names!
Jeremy guessed it! Too bad I don’t have a prize. I lived in Woonsocket for a few years when I first moved to New England.
I have more photos of Woonsocket on my Flickr account. We spent a couple of days wandering around downtown and through the neighborhood taking photos before we left. Most of downtown was deserted by the time we took this photo. It was quite eerie.
But, but, that wasn’t wordless……
Damn! Busted!
Love posts like this! I may have seen that at one time. Half my family lived in RI for awhile.
