Thanks for the graveyard pic. I’m fascinated with them and visit old ones whenever I can. This looks like it might be the Granery in Boston. …one of the oldest and best! And by the way…congrats on the Red Sox win. To think that in decades past they couldn’t get to the series, let alone win it!
This summer I spent lots of time taking pictures in the historical cemeteries in my area. As a result I became rather fascinated with the symbols on the markers. This picture today contains some important symbols.
The first thing we know about this person is that it was a man as there is a Freemason symbol at the top of the marker. Next, the pineapple was used to represent someone who spent time on the sea. The pineapple represented a voyage and safe return from South America. The cherub and the inscription are left over from Puritanical times when the figure on the marker was called a ‘death head’ and was usually a skull. The corruptible body was in the ground while the former occupant was in purgatory or some such place.
The two “flowers” that begin the sweep of wings are really interesting. They look like propellers to me, especially since they are in opposition, which makes me wonder… wings or wakes?
Did you get any information on the person buried in the grave?
Oh yeah! Happy WW!! Great shot. (there, I didn’t forget to post the standard WW greeting).
